WaterhousesBetween here and Hulme End is the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway, a piece of Indian engineering transplanted into Staffordshire. The Edwardian engineer who created it had recently come back from India, where he built narrow gauge railways. Sadly, it only ran from 1904 to 1934 but its track bed has been transformed into the Hamps-Manifold Trail – nine miles of gentle footpath and cycle way. The scenery of the Hamps and Manifold Valleys should be enough to tempt anyone on to this trail, which takes you through limestone gorges, woodlands and picturesque villages. Highlights along the way include Thor’s Cave, Ecton Copper mine and Throwley Old Hall. The terminus at Hulme End has an excellent visitor centre (also see Hulme End). The trail can be reached from car parks at Hulme End, Waterhouses, Weags Bridge near Grindon, and Wetton. |
