WycliffeWycliffe is a picturesque hamlet nestling beside the River Tees, and was once the crossing point from Yorkshire into County Durham. It is believed to be the birthplace of John Wycliffe, the English theologian and proponent of the reformation of the Roman Catholic Church, who made the first translation of the Bible into English. The imposing stone church of St Mary's is an ancient building, rebuilt by Edward III in the 14th century. |
