WolsinghamWolsingham is one of the oldest market towns in County Durham and has its origins in Saxon times. The town has strong links with the iron and steel industries; Charles Attwood who was one of the great pioneers in the manufacture of steel founded the town steelworks, which once cast a variety of anchors and propellers for ships.Tunstall Reservoir, north of Wolsingham, and reached by a narrow lane, lies in a valley of ancient oak woods alongside Waskerley Beck. The reservoir was built in the mid 19th century, originally to provide lime-free water for the locomotives of the Stockton and Darlington Railway to prevent their boilers from scaling like a domestic kettle. It now forms part of a delightful area to stroll, picnic or go fishing. |
