SedgefieldSedgefield, well known for its National Hunt racecourse, is a small town whose market charter was issued in 1315. The grand 15th century tower of St Edmund’s Church dominates the village green and the cluster of Georgian and early Victorian houses. It is famous for its intricately carved Cosin woodwork, which was on a par with the woodwork lost when Brancepeth church was destroyed by fire in 1998. The Laudian Bishop Cosin’s son-in-law, Denis Granville, was rector here in the late 17th century, and it was at this time that the woodwork was installed. A wheelchair-friendly Heritage Trail takes a 1.75-mile tour of the town’s major sights.Hardwick Hall Country Park lies to the west of the town, beyond the A 177. Developed as a pleasure garden between 1748 and 1792 the gardens were all laid out and the ornamental buildings were designed by the architect James Paine. The hall is now a luxury hotel, but the park with its network of woodland walks and Gothic folly is open to the public. |
