SeahamSeaham was developed by the Marquises of Londonderry. In 1821 the family bought what was then the old village of Seaham, in order to build a harbour from which to transport coal from the family’s collieries to London and the Continent. The present town grew up around the harbour, and although most of the collieries have now closed, Seaham is still very much a working town. There is a fine sandy beach in Seaham and a sculpture trail running between the harbour and Seaham Hall celebrating the town’s heritage.A major feature of the coast is the Durham Coastal Footpath, an 11-mile route that runs from Seaham northwards to Crimdon. It passes through dramatic clifftop scenery and deep ravines carved into the Magnesian limestone rock. |
