RookhopeRookhope (pronounced Rook-up), in lonely Rookhope Dale, is on the C2C cycle route, and has a history lost in antiquity, dating back to Roman times.Another old fashioned Dale village, Rookhope is set in a hidden North Pennine valley. The remains of lead and iron mine activity now blend into quiet rural beauty. At one point the road climbs past Rookhope Chimney, part of a lead-smelting mill where poisonous and metallic-rich fumes were refined in long flues. |
