PiercebridgeDriving past the picturesque village green of Piercebridge, most motorists will be unaware that they are passing through the centre of a once important Roman Fort. Piercebridge was one of a chain of forts on Dere Street, which linked the northern Roman headquarters at York with the north. Other forts in the chain were located at Catterick to the south and Binchester, just outside Bishop Auckland, to the north. The remains of the fort, which are still visible today, can be dated from coin evidence to around AD 270. The site is always open and admission is free. Finds from this site are housed in the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle. |
