PeterleePeterlee is a new town, established in 1948 to re-house the mining families from the colliery villages around Easington and Shotton. The town has a modern shopping centre, a tourist information office and a market. Close by is the village of Easington, whose fine old St Mary’s Church sits on a low hill. The church tower is Norman, and the interior contains some examples of Cosin-style woodwork. On the south side of Peterlee, Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve is one of the largest woodlands in the North East that has not been planted or extensively altered by man. |
