Middleton St GeorgeMiddleton St George is a pleasant village on the banks of the River Tees to the east of Darlington, close to Teesside International Airport - once an airfield from which British and Canadian bombers flew during World War II. St George’s Church dates from the 13th century with 18th and 19th century additions, and stands away from the village among fields. Curiously, the stonework has been heavily patched with brick at some point. It is thought to have been built on the site of an old Saxon church and the Victorian pews are rather incongruous - rather more like old-fashioned waiting room seats than pews.Near Middleton St George, the village of Middleton One Row is aptly named – it consists of a single row of Georgian cottages. The cottages were inevitably altered over the years as the arrival of the railway inspired development throughout the region. |
