Middlesbrough

Dominating the skyline of this busy town is the Transporter Bridge, opened in 1911 and the only working bridge of its kind in England. The bridge can carry nine cars or 200 people on each crossing. Captain Cook was born in Middlesbrough in 1728, and in the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Stewart Park, Marton, visitors can chart his life story and experience life below decks in the 18th century through original objects and hands-on displays. Tel: 01642 311211. The Museum stands next to the site of the cottage where he was born (the cottage no longer exists). Also well worth a visit when in Middlesbrough is the Dorman Museum, with themed displays of natural history, social history and world cultures spread over 8 themed galleries and 2 exhibition spaces.

mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, is a new gallery in the heart of Middlesbrough. mima showcases an internationally significant programme of fine art and applied art from the 19th century to the present day. Tel: 01642 726720

On the southeastern edge of Middlesbrough is the National Trust’s Ormesby Hall, a beautiful 18th century mansion with a magnificent stable block attributed to Carr of York and a superb model railway layout and exhibition. Signed off the A19 at Acklam on the southern edge of Middlesbrough, Nature’s World is a pioneering eco-experience featuring organic demonstration and ornamental gardens, wildlife areas, ponds and hydroponicum (indoor tropical garden).
