IreshopeburnAt Ireshopeburn, between Cowshill and St John’s Chapel, is the delightful little Weardale Museum & High House Chapel situated in the former minister’s house next to an 18th century Methodist chapel. The exhibits include a carefully re-created room in a typical Weardale lead-miners’ cottage kitchen, with period furnishings and costumes, local history and mineral displays, and a room dedicated to John Wesley, who visited the area on several occasions. The museum is open during summer months only. This delightful small folk museum was formed in 1985 by a group of senior volunteers. The building is now the oldest Methodist chapel in the world in continuous weekly use since 1760. |
