GuisboroughThe stark ruins of Guisborough Priory stand on an elevated site overlooked by the Cleveland Hills. Founded by the great landowner Robert de Bruis II in 1119, the monastery became one of the most powerful in Yorkshire. Much extended in 1200, and rebuilt after a fire destroyed the whole site, the estate was sold in 1540 to a Thomas Chaloner, who cannibalised much of the fabric to grace ornamental gardens at his grand mansion nearby. Nothing remains of that mansion, and of the Priory itself the great arch at the east end is the most striking survival. The grounds are a popular venue for picnics. |
