GainfordGainford village sits just north of the Tees. At its core is a jostling collection of quaint 18th and 19th century cottages and houses grouped around a village green. At the south west corner of the green is St Mary’s Church - a large church, built mostly in the 12th century from stone that is believed to have come from Piercebridge Roman fort, three miles to the east. Certainly a Roman altar was found built into the tower during the restoration of 1864-65, and it can be seen in the museum of Durham Cathedral.Gainford Hall is a large Jacobean mansion built by the Reverend John Cradock in the early 1600s. Though not open to the public, it can be viewed from the road. It’s hard to believe that in the 19th century the now quiet village of Gainford was a spa, visited by people from all over the North of England. Some way away along the banks of the Tees to the west, a basin can be seen where the sulphurous waters were collected. |
