Finchale PrioryOn a minor road off the A167 lies 13th century Finchale Priory (pronounced Finkle). It was built by the monks of Durham Cathedral as a holiday retreat on the site of a hermitage founded by St Godric in about 1115. The ruins sit on a loop of the Wear in a beautiful location, across the river from Cocken Wood Picnic Area, which is linked to the Priory by a bridge. |
