EscombIn the small village of Escomb is one of the true hidden gems of County Durham – the 7th century Church of St John the Evangelist, built using stone from nearby Binchester Roman Fort. This is one of only three complete Saxon churches in Britain, and is typically Saxon in layout, with its long, high nave and tiny chancel arch. In the south wall of the nave is a curious sundial surrounded by serpents and surmounted by what may be a mythical beast. This church is one of Northern Europe’s finest examples of early Christian architecture. |
