BowesThe ruined Norman castle of Bowes was built on the site of a Roman fort, guarding the approach to Stainmore Pass. In 1838 Charles Dickens visited the village to collect material for Nicholas Nickleby, and noticed a boys’ academy run by William Shaw in the main street. The school became the model for Dotheboys Hall and Shaw was immortalised as Wackford Squeers. Shaw is buried in the churchyard of St Giles’ Church along with George Taylor, Dickens’s inspiration for Smike. “I think,” Dickens later said, “his ghost put Smike into my head upon the spot.” |
