BinchesterBinchester Roman Fort, known to the Romans as Vinovia, was built in around AD 80. It was one of a chain of forts built along Dere Street, and has the best preserved Roman military bathhouse in Britain, complete with a pillared hypocaust heating system. In addition to acting as a military centre controlling the local area, the fort also provided a stopping-off place for troops and supplies heading towards Hadrian’s Wall. A portion of Dere Street has been preserved here. |
