Threave CastleA visit to Threave Castle (Historic Scotland) is something of an experience. It starts with a delightful 10-minute walk to the River Dee where the massive tower stands on an island. Visitors ring a brass bell and the castle custodian rows over to ferry them to the island. A forbidding building, the castle was built in the late 1300s by Archibald the Grim, one of the notorious “Black Douglases”. The family earned this soubriquet by exhibiting a blood-thirstiness that was appalling even by the standards of that barbarous age. The stories of the clan’s reign of terror throughout the area fit well with this brooding, gloomy fortress. |
