RockcliffeRockcliffe was at one time a great smuggling centre but is now a quiet resort sitting on the Rough Firth, one of the smallest firths in Scotland. Off the coast is Rough Island (National Trust for Scotland), a bird sanctuary. It can be accessed at low tide. Close to the village is the great Mote of Mark (National Trust for Scotland), the site of a 5th century fort. Mark was a king featured in the story of Tristan and Isolde, though there is no proof that the fort was ever his. It is more likely to have ben built by a powerful Dark Ages chief. There are a number of footpaths connecting Rockcliffe with Kippford, the two-mile long Jubilee Path (National Trust for Scotland) being the main one. There is a programme of ranger-guided walks along it in the summer months. Castlehill Point, a mile south of the village on a clifftop, can be reached by a pathway. It has the remains of an old ort. |
