Portpatrick

This lovely little village is at the western end of the Southern Upland Way. At one time it was the main Scottish port for Northern Ireland, but was in such an exposed position that Stranraer eventually took over. It sits round a little harbour that is always busy and, with its old ottages and craft shops, has become a small holiday resort.

On a headland to the south of the village are the ruins of Dunskey Castle, built in the early 16th century by the Adair family. Built as a hunting lodge in 1869 by Lady Hunter Blair, Knockinaam Lodge stands to the south of Portpatrick. It is now a hotel, but it was here, during the closing stages of the Second World War, that Churchill and Eisenhower planned the Allied strategy.
