PalnackieThis small, attractive village on the west bank of the Water of Urr is a mile from the sea, though at one time it was a thriving port. However, the meanderings of the river meant that ships were usually towed upstream by teams of horses. Each summer, the village hosts one of the most unusual competitions in Great Britain - the annual World Flounder Tramping Championships, held at the end of July. People come from all over the world to compete, making it a truly international event. The object is to walk out onto the mud flats south of the village at low tide, feeling for flounders hiding beneath the mud with your toes as you go. The person who collects the largest weight of flounders wins the championship. It may seem a light hearted and eccentric competition, but it has a firm basis in local history as this was a recognised way of catching fish in olden times. The North Glen Gallery features glassblowing and interior and exterior design. It is also a good place to get advice on local walks and wildlife. |
