Lockerbie

This quiet market town in Annandale is remembered for one thing - the Lockerbie Disaster of 1988. On the evening of December 21st, Pan Am flight 103 exploded in mid-air after a terrorist bomb was detonated within its hold. The cockpit crashed into a field at Tundergarth, two-and-a-half miles east of the town, and its fuselage crashed into the town itself, killing all the passengers and crew, as well as 11 people on the ground. Remembrance Garden is situated within the town cemetery to the west of the motorway on the A709. It is a peaceful spot, though there is still an air of raw emotion about the place, and no one visits without developing a lump in the throat.

On December 6th, 1593 the Battle of Dryfe Sands took place on the banks of the Dryfe Water north of the town. The two great families in the area - the Maxwells and the Johnstones - were forever fighting about who should be the dominant family on the western border. Eventually the Maxwells brought things to a head by marching into Johnstone territory with 2,000 men. The Johnstones could only muster 400, and a Maxwell victory seemed to be a foregone conclusion. However, when they met in battle at Dryfe Sands, the Johnstones won the day, killing over 700 Maxwells.

To the south of the town is Burnswark, where 2nd century Roman forts are built on the site of an Iron Age fort.
