Langholm

Though within Dumfriesshire, the “muckle toon” of Langholm, in Eskdale, is more of a Borders town than a Dumfries and Galloway one. It was here, in 1892, that Christopher Murray Grieve the poet - better known as Hugh McDiarmid - was born, though it took many years for the people of the town to formally acknowledge his undoubted contribution to Scottish literature. Also born in the town, but not a native, was James Robertson Justice the actor and stalwart of 1950s and 60s British cinema. His mother was passing through and was forced to stop at the Crown Hotel, where he was delivered.

The Armstrong Clan Museum at Lodge Walk in Castleholm traces the history of one of the greatest Borders family. Langholm Castle, which is ruinous (though there has been some restoration work done on it) dates from the 16th century, and stands at the confluence of the River Esk and the Ewes Water. It can be accessed from the car park beside the museum. On the last Friday in July the annual Common Riding Ceremony is held in the town.

On a hillside to the east of the town is the Malcolm Monument, in memory of Sir John Malcolm, who died in 1833. He was born at Burnfoot, a farm near Langholm, in 1769, and became a major-general who distinguished himself in India.

Langholm is Armstrong country, and when Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon, came here in 1972, he was given the freedom of the burgh.
