GlentroolIt was here, close to the lovely but lonely waters of Loch Trool, that Robert I defeated an English army in 1307, a year after his coronation. His soldiers had hidden themselves in he hills above the loch, and when the English troops went past, they rolled great boulders down on them before attacking. It was a urning point in the Wars of Independence, as up until then Robert had had little success. Bruce’s Stone above the loch commemorates the event. It is said that Bruce rested here after the battle was over. The Glentrool Visitor Centre, three miles away, offers information about the surrounding forest walks, and has a small tearoom and gift shop. |
