DundrennanThis quiet village is now visited mainly because of the ruins of the once substantial Dundrennan Abbey (Historic Scotland). It was founded in 1142 by David I and Fergus, Lod of Galloway for the Cistercian monks of Rievaulx in Yorkshire, and was where Mary Stuart spent her last night on Scottish soi in 1568 before sailing for England and her eventual execution. Little of the grand abbey church now remains, though the chapter house and some of the other buildings are well worth seeing, as are some interesting grave slabs. |
