Drumlanrig CastleOne of Scotland’s grandest great houses, Drumlanrig Castle is set in a 120,000-acre estate, and is the Dumfriesshire home of the Duke of Buccleuch. It was built by William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, and completed in 1691. It contains many fine paintings, including works by Gainsborough, Rembrandt and Hans Holbein. In the summer of 2003 the castle was the scene of a daring burglary when a painting by Leonardo da Vinci worth millions of pounds was stolen from it in broad daylight. Within the estate is a country park and gardens, the ruins of Tibbers Castle, craft workshops, a Cycle Museum, working forge and adventure play area. The Drumlanrig Sycamore is one of the largest sycamores in the country, and within the grounds is the first Douglas fir ever planted in the United Kingdom. |
