CreetownSet at the mouth of the River Cree, the neat village of Creetown wasonce a centre for the mining of granite. Now it is visited chiefly because of the Creetown Gem Rock Museum, housed in a former school. It was established in 1971 and since then has amassed a remarkable collection of gemstones and minerals from all over the world. One of the finest privately owned collections of gemstones, crystals, minerals and fossils in Britain, its showroom galleries extend over 3000 square feet and cotain almost every known gemstone and mineral from around the world including huge specimens from the quartz and fluorite crystal groups, exquisite geodes lined with amethyst, agates with spectacular colour bands, opals and even diamonds. There is also a fosilised dinosaur egg and meteorites from outer space. The Creetown Exhibition Centre in St John’s Street has exhibits on local history and wildlife, a well as occasional exhibitions by local artists. Over a weekend in September each year, the Creetown Country Music Weekend takes place, featuring the best in country music. There is also a street air, parades and children’s activities. |
