Chapel FinianBeside the road that runs along the western shore of The Machars, the name given to that great peninsula that sticks out into the Irish Sea between Luce and Wigtown Bays, you’ll find the foundations of a small church. The most interesting thing about them is their great age, as they probably date from the 10th century. Later on the chapel was probably used as a stopping off point for people making a pilgrimage to St Ninian’s Shrine at Whithorn, 12 mies to the southeast.Four miles inland from the chapel, and reached by a minor road off the A7005, is the Old Place of Mochrum, on the northern edge of lonely Mochrum Loch. It was originally built in the 16th century by the Dunar family, and was restored by the Marquis of Bute between 1876 and 1911. The gardens are particularly fine. |
