BalmaclellanThis attractive little village was the home of Robert Paterson, a stonemason who was the model for Old Mortality in Scott’s book of the same name. He travelled Scotland cleaning up the monuments and gravestones of the Covenanters, a group of men and women who fought Charles II’s attempts to impose bishops on the Church of Scotland. Eventually he left home for good to concentrate on this work, leaving behind a no doubt angry wife and five children. Up to his death in 1800, he continued to travel the country, usually on an old grey pony. A statue of him and his horse sits inside the kirkyard of the whitewashed parish church.Just outside the village you will find The Balmaclellan Clog and Shoe Workshop, where 20 styles of footwear are made by hand. Visitors can look round the workshop and see shoes and clogs being made. |
