Tarrant Gunville

A tablet in the church here commemorates the death in 1805 of Thomas Wedgwood, son of the famous potter Josiah. Thomas’s own claim to fame is as a pioneer of photography. He treated a sheet of white paper with a solution of nitrate of silver, placed a fern leaf on it and exposed the sheet to the sun. The resulting image, according to historians of photography, qualifies as possibly the first photograph ever made.
