Mapperton

It’s not surprising to find that the house and gardens at Mapperton have featured in three major films – Tom Jones, Emma and Restoration. Home of the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, this magnificent Jacobean mansion set beside a lake is stunningly photogenic. The Italianate upper gardens contain some impressive topiary, an orangery, dovecote and formal borders descending to fish ponds and shrub gardens. The house stands in an area of outstanding natural beauty with some glorious views of the Dorset hills and has become a popular wedding venue. The gardens are open from the 1st April until the end of September; the house has limited opening from mid-July to mid-August and some bank holidays.
