GodmanstoneDorset can boast many cosy, intimate pubs, but the Smith’s Arms at Godmanstone is in a class of its own, claiming to be the smallest inn in the country with a frontage just 11 feet wide. This appealing 14th-century thatched building was originally the village smithy. According to tradition, Charles II happened to stop here to have his horse shod. Feeling thirsty, the king asked for a glass of ale and was not best pleased to be told that as the blacksmith had no licence, no alcoholic drink was available. Invoking the royal prerogative, Charles granted a licence immediately and this tiny hostelry has been licensed ever since. Given the cramped interior, elbow-bending at the Smith’s Arms can be a problem at busy times, but fortunately there is a spacious terrace outside. |
