WoodburySt Swithin’s Church at Woodbury has achieved a rather sad kind of fame because of the Rev J Loveband Fulford who, in 1846, cut great chunks out of its medieval rood screen so that his parishioners could see him more clearly. Fortunately he left untouched the fine 15th-century font made from Beer stone, the Jacobean pulpit, and the interesting memorials.A mile or so to the east of the village is the famous Woodbury Common viewpoint. More than 560 feet high, it provides spectacular vistas across the Exe estuary to Dartmoor, and along the south Devon coast. It’s easy to understand why an Iron Age tribe chose this spot to build their massive fort whose huge ramparts lie close to the viewpoint. |
