WinkleighThis attractive village with its open views across to Dartmoor is believed to have been a beacon station in prehistoric times. When the Normans arrived they built two small castles, one at each end of the village. They were probably intended as bases for hunting in the nearby park – the only Devon park to be mentioned in the Domesday Book. For centuries Winkleigh was an important local trading centre with its own market, fair and borough court. Today, it’s a peaceful little place with thatched cottages nestling up to the mainly 15th century church which has a richly carved and painted waggon roof where 70 golden-winged angels stand guard over the nave. |
