West DownThis village of whitewashed houses beside the River Caen is noted for its tiny church whose nave is barely 15 feet wide. Mostly rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries, the church has, nevertheless, retained a fine oak roof that dates from the 14th century, a Norman font that was discovered beneath the floor, and a rare wooden figure of Sir John Stowforth, Justice of the Common Pleas in the 1300s. Here, he is shown wearing the still colourful robes of a Serjeant-at-Law. |
