Wembury

Wembury church provides a dramatic landmark as it stands isolated on the edge of the cliff, and the coastal path here provides spectacular views of the Yealm estuary to the east, and Plymouth Sound to the west. The path is occasionally closed to walkers when the firing range is in use, so look out for the red warning flags. The Great Mew Stone stands a mile offshore in Wembury Bay. This lonely islet was inhabited until the 1830s when its last residents, the part-time smuggler Sam Wakeham and his family, gave up the unequal struggle to make a living here. The Mew Stone is now the home of seabirds.
