ThurlestoneOne of the most attractive coastal villages, with many thatched and white-washed cottages, Thurlestone can boast not just one, but two beaches, separated by a headland. Both beaches are recommended, especially the one to the south with its view of the pierced, or ‘thyrled’, stone, the offshore rock from which the settlement gets its name and which was specifically mentioned in a charter of AD846. The village itself stands on a long, flat-topped ridge above the beaches and is an attractive mixture of flower-decked cottages, old farm buildings and long-established shops and inns. |
