Tamerton FoliotSet on a hillside overlooking a large creek that runs into the River Tamar, Tamerton Foliot was the birthplace of Gilbert Foliot who was to hold the position of Bishop of London for 35 years, from 1153 to 1188. He was an arch-adversary of Thomas à Becket who excommunicated him, a punishment that was overturned by the Pope. The village has a 15th century church with some outstanding monuments to the local landowners, the Copleston, Gorges and Radcliffe families, and an interesting Tudor pulpit with linen fold panelling.Overlooking the Tavy and Tamar estuary, Warleigh Point Nature Reserve includes one of the finest examples of coastal oak woodland in Devon and, along with magnificent views, is home to a wealth of wildlife. |
