StowfordAn unusual feature in the churchyard of St John’s Church is a stone by the gate that is carved in the Ogham script with the word ‘Gunglei’ and this is believed to be the name of a Roman soldier who was buried here some 1600 years ago. Inside the church are two monuments to the Harris family: John who died in 1767 and Christopher who departed this life in 1718. The latter is curious not only for showing Christopher in the costume of a Roman centurion but also because “the figures are life-size down to the waist and then stunted as if the sculptor had grown weary of them.” |
