Stoke GabrielA charming village of narrow lanes and alleys, Stoke Gabril stands on a hillside above a tidal spur of the River Dart. A weir was built across the neck of the creek in Edwardian times and this traps the water at low tide, giving the village a pleasant lakeside atmosphere. The part 13th-century church of St Gabriel has a restored late-medieval pulpit and a truncated screen with some good wainscot paintings. In the churchyard are the rather forlorn remains of an oak tree reputed to be more than 1500 years old. To the west o the village, a lane leads to the riverside hamlet of Duncannon where, by general consent, the River Dart is at its most lovely. |
