SidfordAs its name suggests, Sidford stands beside a narrow stretch of the River Sid – one of the shortest rivers in England – that rises from spring-fed waters to the east of Ottery St Mary and tumbles and twists down a narrow valley for just four miles before entering Lyme Bay at Sidmouth. The village is famous for its Norman Packhorse Bridge, dating from the 12th century, which has played an important part in local history over the centuries, not least during the Civil War when there was a skirmish here in 1644. |
