PowderhamPowderham Castle has been the home of the Courtenay family, Earls of Devon, since 1390. The castle stands in a beautiful setting alongside the River Exe and is at the centre of a large traditional estate of about 4000 acres. The present building is mostly 18th-century and contains some fine interiors, a breathtaking Grand Staircase, and historic family portraits – some of them by Sir Joshua Reynolds, a Devon man himself. The guided tours take in an 18th-century music room designed by James Wyatt, and a restored Victorian kitchen. |
