MonkleighMonkleigh parish church contains a striking monument, an ornate canopied tomb containing the remains of Sir William Hankford who was Lord Chief Justice of England in the early 1400s. He lived at nearby Annery Park and the story goes that having been troubled by poachers Sir William instructed his gamekeeper to shoot anyone he found in the park at night. The gamekeeper did indeed see a figure passing through the park, fired and discovered to his horror that he had killed his master. |
