MeethA mile or so north of Hatherleigh, the A386 crosses the River Torridge and a couple of miles further is the pleasant little village of Meeth whose Old English name means the meeting of the strems. Indeed, a small brook runs down the hillside into the Torridge. From the early 1700s, Meeth and the surrounding area was noted for its ‘pipe’ and ‘ball clay’ products, generically known as pottery clay. There are still extensive clay works to the northwest of the village. But for cyclists and walkers Meeth is much better known as the southern terminus of the Tarka Walkway, which runs northwards through Bideford and Barnstaple. |
