LiftonSituated on the banks of the River Lyd, Lifton was, in medieval times, an important centre of the wool trade. Dartmoor sheep tend to have rather coarse fleeces, due to the cold pastureland, so the weavers of Lifton petitioned Henry VII, “by reason of the grossness and stubbornness of their district” to allow them to mix as much lambs’ wool and flock with their wool “as may be required to work it”.Just to the east of Lifton is Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre where visitors can see one of the best working steam collections in the country, including traction engines, steam rollers, fairground attractions and vintage machinery. There’s also a collection of vintage road signs, play areas for children, a gift shop, café and riverside walks. |
