LewtrenchardA pleasant village situated in a wooded valley, where between 1881 and 1924, the Rev Sabine Baring-Gould was squire then rector. Best known as the composer of the hymn, Onward, Christian Soldiers, Baring-Gould was also a prolific prose writer. He regularly produced two or three books a year – novels, historical works such as Curious Myths of the Middle Ages, and books on Devon legends and folklore. Baring-Gould nevertheless found time to restore St Peter’s Church. His most remarkable success was the creation of a replica of a medieval screen that his grandfather, also a rector here, had destroyed. The grandson found enough pieces remaining for the replica to be made. It is very impressive with an elaborate canopied loft decorated with paintings of 23 saints. The Revd. Sabine scandalised Victorian society by marrying a Lancashire mill girl but the union proved to be a happy one and they had a huge family. One local story tells how, one day, emerging from his study, the rector saw a little girl coming down the stairs. “You look nice, my dear, in your pretty frock,” he said, vaguely remembering that a children’s party was under way. “Whose little girl are you?” “Yours, papa,” she answered and burst into tears. |
