InstowThe older part of this delightful village lies inland from the Torridge estuary while, looking out over the magnificent beach, there are some early 19th-century villas. Here, too, is the Instow Signal Box that was built in 1873 to control the crossing gates and the passing loop at Instow Station. It has been restored and is now the first Grade II listed signal box in the country. Visitors can see its machinery, gate wheel and instruments as well as ‘pull off’ a re-instated signal.During the summer months, there’s a ferry across the estuary to Appledore.Just south of the village are Tapeley Park Gardens, some 35 acres of grounds on the eastern bank of the River Torridge. From here there are excellent views across the estuary and over to Lundy Island. Along with the lake reached by a woodland walk, there are masses of hydrangeas, rhododendrons and camellias. As well as the renovated Italian terraces and the restored walled kitchen garden, Tapeley has an organic perma culture garden where fruit, vegetables, nuts and herbs are mixed together using companion planting. There is also a children’s play area and a variety of animals and pets to entertain the youngsters. The gardens are open daily, except Saturdays, from mid-March to the end of October; the Queen Anne house is open only to groups by appointment. |
