High BickingtonTwo miles south of Atherington is another hilltop village. Standing at almost 600 feet above sea level, the village commands excellent views in all directions. It boasts a fine 16th-century inn, The George, which is set amongst a delightful group of thatched cottages, and a parish church dating back to the 1100s, which is renowned for its exceptional collection of carved bench and pew ends. There are around 70 of them in all: some are Gothic (characterised by fine tracery); others are Renaissance (characterised by rounded figures). More recent carving on the choir stalls depicts an appealing collection of animals and birds. |
