GeorgehamIt was in Georgeham that Henry Williamson settled in 1921 and where he wrote his most famous novel, Tarka the Otter, published in 1927. Tarka lived in the land between the Taw and Torridge rivers and many of the small villages and settlements feature in the story. After World War Two, Williamson farmed for a while in Norfolk but returned to Georgeham where he died in 1947. He is buried in the graveyard of St George’s Church. Skirr Cottage, which he rented while writing Tarka, is now a self-catering holiday home. |
