Brent TorBrent Tor, an 1100 foot-high volcanic plug that rears up from the surrounding countryside is one of the most striking sights in the whole of Dartmoor. Perched on its summit is the Church of St Michael of the Rocks, the fourth smallest complete church in England. St Michael’s is only 15 feet wide and 37 feet long and has walls only 10 feet high, but three feet thick. Constructed of stone that was quarried from the rock beneath, the church is surrounded by a steep churchyard that contains a surprising number of graves considering its precarious and seemingly soil-less position. Sometimes lost in cloud, the scramble to the summit of Brent Tor is rewarded on a clear day with magnificent views of Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the sea at Plymouth Sound. |
